SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT GOES DIGITAL

SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT GOES DIGITAL

The sheriff’s department is expected to transition from analogue to digital radio communications this week.

While digital communication has been available to the sheriff’s department for several months, the department continued to communicate primarily by analogue means.

A number of residents listen to sheriff’s department analogue radio communication through police scanners which will not pick up the digital transmission.

Sheriff Steve Hopper said the department remained on analogue because he felt the public “provided another set of eyes and ears” in watching and reporting criminal activity.

Sheriff Hopper said the change had to be made because of a radio transmission frequency issue.

The county’s ambulance service, rescue squad and fire departments switched to digital communication several months ago.
