Mr. David Manning McCall

Mr. David Manning McCall, age 70 of Carthage, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, April 27, 2008 from his home. Funeral services for Mr. McCall were held at the Rome Baptist Church on Wednesday, April 30, 2008. The eulogy was given by his son, Cris, a tribute by his nephew, Jack McCall, and words of comfort by Bro. Mike Shelby. Interment was at Smith County Memorial Gardens, Carthage, with Elder Jackie Wilburn as speaker. Dave was a former owner of D. T. McCall & Sons and had been a member of a Southern Baptist Church for 56 years. He was born in Smith County on November 3, 1937 and was one of nine children born to the late D. T. and Amy Manning McCall. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Frank McCall and Reverend Ray McCall. He was married on June 7, 1958 to Rebecca Hackett. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Rebecca Hackett McCall; two sons, Mark Manning McCall, wife Sandra and their children, Zach and Morgan; Cris McCall, wife Daphne and their children, Mia, Taylor and Colby, all of Smith County. In addition, he is survived by six siblings: Lois McDonald and husband, Cordell, of South Carthage; Albert McCall and wife, Virginia, of Carthage; Mary Nell Hight and husband, Tommy, of Tanglewood; Mildred Hix and husband, Charles, of Cowan; Ruth Garrett and husband, Gary, of Hendersonville; John McCall and wife, Kaye, of Tanglewood; two sisters-in-law, Mary Helen McCall of Watervale and Helen McCall of Carthage; one sister and two brothers by marriage: Katherine Hackett Ballal of Cookeville; Dr. Jerry Hackett of Manchester and David Hackett of Maryville; loved friend of the family Wilma Thackxton. Mrs. Linda Burton Harris

Mrs. Linda Burton Harris, age 58 of Gordonsville, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at Riverview Regional Medical Center, Carthage. Mrs. Harris was born March 13, 1950 in Carthage, the daughter of the late Ina Bush and Hubert Burton. She was married on December 13, 1969 to Frank Stanley Harris. She was an alderman for the Town of Gordonsville for eight years. She was a member of the North Gordonsville Missionary Baptist Church. Linda is survived by her husband of 38 years, Stanley Harris of Gordonsville; son and daughter-in-law, Shannon and Ronda Harris of New Middleton; three grandchildren: Kelsi Shay Harris, Maegan Ashley Harris and Peyton Allen Harris; sister, Janice (David) Bowman of Carthage; niece, Gina Bowman Wheeley; mother-in-law, Malissa Harris of Gordonsville. Sgt. Comer Wilson “Butch” Whited

Sgt. Comer Wilson “Butch” Whited, (U. S. Army Retired) age 64 of Rockford, Illinois and formerly of Hickman, died April 26, 2008. He was born and raised in Hickman, the son of the late Flonnie Lynch and John Henry Whited. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Geraldine, Inez, Elizabeth, Ray, Sanford and Douglas. During his years of service to his country, he served in the Vietnam War. He is survived by his wife, Margo Whited of Rockford, Illinois; sons, Henry, Greg, Darrel and John; daughters, Debra and Laura; 13 grandchildren; sisters, Leoda and Velda; brothers, John and Billy. Mr. Edward Lee “Jack” Peach

Mr. Edward Lee “Jack” Peach, age 79 of Gordonsville, passed away Monday, April 28, 2008, at his residence. Jack was born September 27, 1928 in Gordonsville, the son of the late Mattie Louise Squires and Edward Delmas Peach. His father died when he was 2 years old and his mother died when he was only 4. His grandparents (Squires) took him in and raised him. He worked for room and board in the early years only going to school until the 4th grade. In 1980 he earned his G.E.D. certificate. Jack was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Army from February 13, 1951 to May 31, 1954. After his service in the Army, he drove a truck hauling asphalt helping pave I-40 from Nashville to Knoxville and driving an eighteen wheeler for many years, traveling to every state in the continental United States. In 1981 he got his E.M.T. license and drove an ambulance for Wilson County EMS. He then started to work for the Town of Gordonsville and worked for them several years in many capacities. He helped organize the local Fun Festival and the annual Christmas parade. He made and hung the first Christmas decorations and light in the town, directed traffic at Gordonsville School and was at one time fire chief for the fire department. He was elected and served one year as an alderman for the Town of Gordonsville. Jack was married on October 7, 1950, to Belvia Jean Dickerson and she preceded him in death on January 14, 2008. He was a member of the Family Worship Center, Church of God of Prophecy in Gordonsville and played for several years in a gospel band and singing group. Mr. Peach is survived by his children: Jackie (Greg) Womack of Gordonsville, Roger D. (Carolyn) Peach of the Hiwassee community, Rita Lockler of Hiwassee, Troy E. (Helen) Peach of Lebanon, Jimmy H. Peach of Hiwassee and Lisa Sorrels of Lebanon; 28 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. Mr. Dewey Hatton White

Mr. Dewey Hatton White, age 77 of Brush Creek, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at University Medical Center, Lebanon. Mr. White was born November 7, 1930 in Grant, the son of the late Annie Lee Craig and Charlie Burley White. A sister, Charlene, and a brother, Harry, preceded him in death. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Navy from January 8, 1951 to November 5, 1954. He was a parts manager in the automotive industry. He was married on August 4, 1956, to Brenda Gale Johnston. He was a member of Andrew Price United Methodist Church in Donelson. Mr. White is survived by his wife of 51 years, Brenda Johnston White of Brush Creek; son, Dewey Lamont (Michelle) White of Lebanon; daughters, Dana Lynette (Charles) Frazier of Woodbury and Crystal Nichole (Kenneth) Cowles of Hickman; seven grandchildren, Jacob White, Tony Ramond, Shelly Hendrixson, Justin Skinner, Roy Frazier, Mary Cowles and Timothy Cowles; 11 great -grandchildren; brothers, Leon White of Lebanon, Homer White of Beaumont, Texas and Paul White of Alexandria; sisters, Linda Sue Hale of Nashville, Frances Darnell of Lebanon, Carlene Martin of Smithville, Carolyn Loveall of Kentucky, Pauline Meyer of Arizona, Ruth Ann McNulty of Nevada, Beulah Perry of California and Joy Dix of Castalian Springs. Mrs. Reba Watts Korman

Graveside services for Mrs. Reba Watts Korman were held Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the Gordonsville Cemetery with Bro. Matt Long officiating. Reba was lifted from the land of the living on Friday, May 2, 2008, at Riverview Regional Medical Center South surrounded by daughters, brother, family and dedicated medical personnel. She was a member of the New Middleton Methodist Church. Reba was born in Gordonsville, the daughter of the late Cecil G. and Irene Parker Watts. She was a 1951 graduate of Gordonsville High School. She loved all members and teachers of her graduating class, along with many other school friends, neighbors, relatives and others. She was married to Thomas (Tommy) Korman on June, 7, 1952, and he preceded her in death on May, 4, 2003. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant sister, Francis Watts. Frances Sue Sircy Boze

Frances Sue Sircy Boze, age 84 of Gallatin, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at Brandywood Rehabilitation Center in Gallatin. Funeral services for Mrs. Boze were conducted on Friday, April 2, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. from the chapel of Family Heritage Funeral Home in Gallatin with Elder Jerry Boze officiating. Tommy Boze, Don Boze, Bill Edwards, Jimmy Joe Boze, Brad Shoulders and Steve Brown served as pallbearers. Entombment followed in the Sumner Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. She was born on December 2, 1923 in Jackson County, one of two siblings of the late Willie Chester and Bessie Wilkerson Sircy. She was married to James Gordon Boze on May 29, 1943, who survives. In addition to her parents, her brother, Draper “Spoodle” Sircy, son-in-law, Charles Martin, brothers-in-law, Dewitt and Prentice Boze, and sister-in-law, June Shoulders, preceded her in death. She had been an employee of the Eaton Corporation for over 25 years before retirement and was a member of the West End Missionary Baptist Church in Gallatin. Mary “Fito” “Gam” Fitzpatrick Gatlin

Mary “Fito” “Gam” Fitzpatrick Gatlin entered into final rest to be with the Lord and her beloved husband, Nolen Gatlin, Friday evening. She was the daughter of Lee Compton and Kala Fitzpatrick, born May 5, 1928 in Old Hickory and later raised in Chestnut Mound. She was a homemaker and mother of three children who expressed her love for history by serving as a docent at The Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson, for more than 20 years. She served as a volunteer and fund raiser for the Fanny Battle Day Home and other organizations. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nolen Gatlin, and also her parents. She is survived by a son, Gray (Scott) Gatlin; daughters, Jenny (Terry) Harris and Holly (Darryl) Cooper; grandchildren, Matt (Kristen) Harris, Blake (Amanda) Harris, Lauren Prosser, Kala Prosser, Reed Gatlin Williams, Chris (Sara) Cooper, Nick (Jaime) Cooper; great-grandchildren, Brodie Harris, River Cooper, Lily Cooper, Riley Cooper and Reagan Cooper; brother, “Pap” (Martha Nell) Fitzpatrick; nieces, nephews, close friends and the Bunko girls. Mildred Cuma Shoulders

Mildred Cuma Shoulders, age 75 of the Enon community in Macon County, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2008, at the Macon County General Hospital. Funeral services for Mrs. Shoulders were conducted Thursday, May 1, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. from the Enon Missionary Baptist Church with Elder Jeff Blackwell officiating. Dr. Hanna Ilia served as honorary pallbearer. Richard Sanders, Scott Harrell, Jeff Regan, Mike Webb, Shannon Carter, Benny Meador, Gary Brewster, Ricky Fleming served as active pallbearers. Burial followed in the Enon Cemetery. Mrs. Shoulders was born on January 11, 1933, in Macon County, one of four siblings to the late Thomas Mitchell and Erma Dell (Blankenship) Carter. She was married to Elder J.E. Shoulders on June 12, 1948, who survives and resides in the Enon community. Elder Shoulders has pastored churches in Smith County. In addition to her parents, an infant daughter, Melba Jean Shoulders, and one brother, Gerald “Jamup” Carter, preceded her in death. She was a homemaker who loved to be around her family and friends. She was always supportive of her husband’s ministry and with him every time she could go. She was a member of the Enon Missionary Baptist Church. She is survived by: husband, Elder J.E. Shoulders of the Enon community in Macon County; son, Harold (Marlene) Shoulders of Westmoreland; daughter, Kathy (Fred) Dunlap of Maryville; brothers, Stephen (Jean) Carter and Mitchell (Donna) Carter, all of the Enon community of Macon County; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mr. George Barnes

Mr. George Barnes, age 69 of the Buffalo community, died at 3:00 a.m., Monday morning, April 28, 2008 at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin of apparent heart failure. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, April 30, from the Hackett Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home by Bro. Johnathan Martin. Mr. Barnes was cremated on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. at Cumberland Family Services in Algood. One of nine children of the late Edward Francis and Anna Mae Helwig Barnes, he was born George Edward Barnes on October 28, 1938 in Reistertown in Baltimore County, Maryland. Two sisters preceded him in death-Audrey Grinder and a sister who died as a infant. Mr. Barnes was married in Lakeland, Florida on October 11, 1976 to the former Deborah Lee Miller. Two children preceded Mr. Barnes in death-Juanita and Eddie Barnes. Mr. Barnes was a veteran of the United States Navy. Mr. and Mrs. Barnes owned the D&G Trucking Co. in Tampa, Florida, selling the business and retiring in 1999. In May of 2006, they relocated to Smith County on Buffalo Road. He was of the Baptist faith. Surviving in addition to his wife of over thirty-one years are nine children, Angel Barnes, Hope Denmark and George Barnes, Jr., all of Buffalo, Edward and John Barnes of Thonotosassa, Florida, Dawn Keene of Bradenton, Florida, Peggy Barnes of Ruskin, Florida, Paula Barnes of Tampa, Florida and Wanda Barnes of Maryland; three sisters, Roma McClaughtery, Emma Lancaster and Dorothy Grimes all of Maryland; three brothers, Larry Barnes of Maryland, Thomas Barnes of Buffalo and Charles Barnes of Maryland; several grandchildren. Mr. Joe Johnston

Funeral services for Mr. Joe Johnston of Lebanon were conducted Sunday afternoon, May 4, from the Ligon & Bobo Funeral Home on West Main in Lebanon. Rev. Gordon Lee and Rev. Scott Turner officiated. Burial was in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Lebanon. Mr. Johnston died at the age of 88 at 5:50 a.m., Friday morning, May 2, 2008 at the St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. Born Joseph Carter Johnston in Smith County on September 19, 1919, he was one of eight children of the late M.A. and Nettie Wilkerson Johnston. Five siblings preceded Mr. Johnston in death, Sadie Gilbert, Lois Speck, Taft Johnston, Hoyal Johnston and longtime United Methodist minister and former pastor of the Dycus Circuit at Kempville, Rev. Otis Johnston. Mr. Johnston was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a professional horse trainer, having trained several American Saddle breeds. He was a longtime member of the Lebanon Rotary Club, the American Legion and the Professional Horseman’s Association. Surviving in addition to his wife of thirty-four years, the former Sarah Frances Clemons, are four children, Chad Jones of Lebanon, Jody Johnston and wife, Rebecca, of Johnson City, Casey Johnston and wife, Angie, and Amy Bass and husband, Blake, all of Lebanon; two sisters, Beady Johnston of Lebanon and Brenda White of Brush Creek; mother-in-law, Jean Clemons of Lebanon; five grandchildren, Caitie and Will Jones, Kasey Johnston, Emma Kate and Carter Bass. Mrs. Gwendolyn Dies Fisher

Mrs. Gwendolyn Dies Fisher, age 78, a homemaker of the Puryears Bend community at Hartsville, died at 10:25 a.m. Friday morning, May 2, 2008 at the Trousdale Medical Center of pneumonia. Sunday afternoon, May 4, funeral services for Mrs. Fisher were conducted from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home with Bro. Randy Swaffer officiating. Burial following the 1:00 p.m. services was in the Dixon Springs Cemetery. Born June 11, 1929 in Lebanon, she was one of seven children of the late Herman and Eumphry Phillips Dies. A sister, Helen King, preceded her in death. On May 15, 1948, in Scottsville, Kentucky, Miss Dies was united in marriage to James Franklin Fisher. Mrs. Fisher was a member of the Knob Springs Missionary Baptist Church at Hiwassee. Surviving in addition to her husband of almost sixty years are four children, Barbara Belcher, Betty Jo Scott, James L. Fisher and wife, Anita, and Phillip Fisher, all of Hartsville; sister, Tommie Ray Tomlinson and husband, Ray Allen, of Lebanon; four brothers, Frankie Dies and wife, Betty, Clarence Dies and wife, Laura, Ethel Dies and wife, Jewel, and Jerry Dies and wife, Barbara, all of Lebanon; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Randall Brooks

Defeated Creek community native Randall Brooks, age 47 of the Riddleton community, died Sunday evening, May 4, 2008 at 8:22 p.m. at Riverview Regional Medical Center in Carthage of lung cancer. Mr. Brooks is at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home where his family was to make arrangements at 2:00 p.m. Monday afternoon. He was the son of the late Draper Lee and Jewel Kemp Brooks Green. Surviving are two sons, Derrick Brooks and wife, Beth of Carthage, Joey Brooks of Carthage; siblings, Richard Lee Brooks, Mark Brooks and wife, Myra, all of Carthage, Lisa Miller of South Carthage. Mrs. Leila Proffitt

Mrs. Leila Proffitt, a retired dietitian of South Carthage, died at the age of 80 at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, April 30, 2008 at Alive Hospice at the Skyline Madison Campus following a brief illness. Her pastor, Bro. Jack Ray, and a longtime family friend, Eld. Lewis Sandlin, officiated at the 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Smith County Memorial Gardens. Born Leila Belle Day in Carthage on May 19, 1927, she was the daughter of the late William Clarence “Pet” Day and Pearlie Lynn Clemons Day. On November 17, 1942 in Rossville, Georgia, she was united in marriage to Edward Alex Proffitt who preceded her in death on September 22, 2007 after almost sixty-five years of marriage. A daughter preceded them in death, Elizabeth R. “Libby” Gregory who died August 11, 1991 at the age of 45 and her husband, Buford “Boots” Gregory, who died May 22, 2001 at the age of 58. Also preceding them in death was another son-in-law, Colburn Roscoe “Karl” Howard, who died April 16, 1993. Mrs. Proffitt had an associates degree from Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin in food service. She was the food service manager at Carthage General Hospital for over twenty-five years, having retired in 1996. She was a member of the Abundant Harvest Worship Center in South Carthage. Mrs. Proffitt was a Past Matron and longtime member of the Carthage Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are her daughter, Leila Anne Proffitt Howard of South Carthage; five siblings, Rose Palmer of McMinnville, Ann Browne of Lebanon, Joyce Woodard of Brooks Bend, Linda McClanahan of Murfreesboro, William Thomas “Bill” Day of Mt. Juliet; step-mother, Dorothy Day of Murfreesboro; four grandchildren, Flip Gregory and wife, Yvette, Sebrina Kelly and husband, Dulin, all of Hendersonville, Scott Howard and wife, Donna, of Lebanon and Amie Kirby and husband, Jerrell, of Cartersville, Georgia; seven great-grandchildren, Daniel Puckett, Kaitlyn Howard, Christian and Carter Gregory, Retta, Karla and Porter Kirby.
