Obit – Mr. Jeffery Maggart
An avid and successful drag race car driver and car builder has died at the age of 59 from complications of diabetes.
Mr. Jeffery Maggart of the Popes Hill Community was admitted on Monday morning to the Highpoint – Riverview Emergency Room with C. P. R. in progress after his wife discovered him in respiratory distress at their Bob Moore Lane home. He was pronounced deceased at 11:02 a.m. August 12, 2024.
Funeral services were conducted Monday morning August 19th at 11 a.m. from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home with Eld. Shane Gregory officiating. Burial followed beside his parents in the Maggart family lot in section five at the Ridgewood Cemetery in Carthage.
One of three children, two sons and a daughter, he was born Jeffery Clay Maggart at the former McFarland Hospital in Lebanon on October 2, 1964 and was the son of the late Frank Lee Maggart, who died June 3, 1990 at the age of 61 and Virginia Frances Grisham Maggart who died December 6, 2012 at the age of 79.
He was a member of the 1982 graduating class at Smith County High School. There he majored in Vocational and Industrial Trades and was a member of the Future Farmers of America and was a member of the Pep Club his junior year.
Always a possessing keen interest in automobiles, his father owned and operated Maggart’s Auto Repair in the Chestnut Mound Community where he was always around cars.
He was former owner of the Keystop Market at the Smith-Wilson County line and was formerly employed at Rocky Williams Auto Dealership in Lebanon as a mechanic.
He was a multi-event winner in drag racing and in 1992 he was the first winner in the door car 5 Day event in West Palm Beach, Florida. In the big first night event held in Huntsville, Alabama, he won $10,000.00 the night before the main Saturday event which was the $1,000,000.00 race.
Building his own competitive cars, he won first place in many races at the Buffalo Valley Drag Strip and the I-40 Drag Strip in Crossville.
Mr. Maggart was saved at the age of 10 and joined the Maggart United Methodist Church in the Maggart Community.
He was united in marriage of February 6, 2019 to Fentress County native, the former Angela Carol Crockett. The ceremony was performed at Mr. Maggart’s Bob Moore Lane home by Eld. James “Pee Wee” Massey.
Surviving in addition to Jeffery’s wife Angie is his son, Browning Maggart of Riverpoint; sister, Barbara Maggart Duke and husband Tommy and their daughter, Kira Duke all of the Chestnut Mound Community and their son, Josh Duke and wife Brittany of Gordonsville; brother, Ronnie Maggart and wife Tammy and their daughter Amanda Maggart Hodges and husband Joseph of Portland; step-daughter, Savannah Burke of Jamestown, TN; grandson, Avan Maggart.
