A Sullivans Bend resident died in a house fire last week.

The victim was identified as Mike Shumake, 64.

Shumake’s wife managed to escape the burning structure.

The fire was reported to 911 around noon, Tuesday (January 23) at 7 Preston Lane.

Prior to their arrival, emergency personnel were alerted to an individual inside the structure when the fire was reported.

A sheriffs department deputy was one of the first to arrive at the scene, reporting the structure was fully involved.

Forks River, Central District, Rock City/Rome, Lancaster and Gordonsville fire departments responded to the call.

The house, described as a double-wide mobile home, and its contents were completely destroyed in the fire.

The two were the only individuals at the residence when the fire occurred.

Since the fire involved a fatality, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating the incident.

Also, County Fire Investigator Jason Powell and  the sheriffs department also are investigating the fire.

As it is an ongoing case, officials have declined to comment or provide details of the incident such as how the fire started.
