SPEEDY MACON RACES BY OWLS

CARTHAGE — The Smith County High Owls football team moved their game a day earlier because of the threat of inclement weather as they played their third home game of the season.
The Thursday night matchup saw Class 4A Macon County come to town as they suffered a heart-breaking 35-34 loss in region play to Upperman last Friday night in Baxter.
The Tigers used their speed to crank out 441 yards on their way to a 49-6 victory to improve to 3-1 overall.
“I’m proud of our players and staff,” said Smith County head football coach Matt Dyer. “Our guys played hard and tough. And that’s what we ask them to do every week, win or lose, just play hard and fight all night. We moved the ball at times, especially through the air. Penalties and turnovers hurt us and stopped some drives. We had the ball inside the 25 three times and came away with no points. Defensively, we gave up too many big plays. We did not tackle very well. Macon is a really good 4A football team with 17 seniors I believe, who have played a lot of football games and are experienced.”
Dyer continued, “They have a two time Mr. Football finalist in the (Gabe) Borders kid and he is very talented. This is the third week in a row we have played a school bigger than us, and it will continue to make us better playing great competition. We are still growing and developing as a team, and we are getting better every week. We just need to be more consistent with our execution and assignments. We need to cut down on the untimely penalties and turnovers. We just have to put this one behind us and focus on next week and get ready for region play.”
