MIDSEASON STUMBLES; Unbeaten, explosive Indians storm past Owls in Region 3-2A encounter

CARTHAGE — The Smith County High Owls football team played its fourth home game in six 2024 regular season games with a matchup against top-ranked East Robertson in Carthage last Friday night.
The Owls won the matchup a year ago in Cross Plains to claim the 2023 regular season Region 3-2A crown.
The Indians returned a lot of key personnel off last year’s Class 2A state runners-up team.
East Robertson used their ground game to key a 27-8 victory as their first team defense held the Owls to only 58 yards. The visitors had 45 rushes for 236 yards as they improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in region play.
“I’m proud of our guys and coaches for the effort they put into this week and game,” said Smith County football head coach Matt Dyer. “It wasn’t the outcome we wanted, but our guys played really hard for four quarters and that is what we ask them to do each and every week. East Robertson is a really good team and ranked No.1 in Class 2A for a reason. They are an experienced team and very talented.”
The Owls dropped to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in 3-2A.
“We had some missed opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on,” said Dyer. “A couple of turnovers, dropped passes and penalties hurt a few of our drives. We had a few missed assignments that kept us behind the chains.”
