Obit – Ms. Mable Spivey
Ms. Mable Spivey of Carthage was discovered unresponsive at her Carthage Village home on Saturday morning January 17, 2026 at 8:05 a.m. by her daughter Margie, with whom she resided. She was pronounced deceased at 8:57 a.m. at the Highpoint Health – Riverview at St. Thomas Ascension Emergency Department.
Mrs. Spivey, the mother of six children, was at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home where her funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon January 20th at 3 p.m. with Bro. Frank Bratcher officiating. Burial followed beside her husband Billy, in the Garden of the Cross at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.
She was born Mable Willodean Hughes in the Reece Hollow Community on September 1, 1933 and was one of three daughters and two sons of the late William Frank “Crat” Hughes who died at the age of 70 on October 28, 1973 and Vassie Espy Givens Hughes who died at the age of 77 on June 11, 1987.
Her husband of almost fifty-one years, Carthage native Billy Ray Spivey, preceded her in death on April 2, 2003 at the age of 70. They were united in marriage on May 21, 1952.
Two of her six children preceded her in death; Patty (Pat) Carnet Spivey Butts who died August 16, 2018 at the age of 58 and Billy Charles Spivey who died May 16, 2025 at the age of 70.
Three of her siblings also preceded her in death; Lester Gordon Hughes who died March 28, 2022 at the age of 86, Ada Pauline Hughes Williams who died January 18, 2009 at the age of 77 and Tommy Charles Hughes who died February 21, 1996 at the age of 54.
She retired in 1993 from the Carthage Shirt Corporation with thirty-five years of service.
Mrs. Spivey attended the Carthage First Freewill Baptist Church in the Tanglewood Community
She lived a life devoted to her family and hard work and as a mother suffered the loss of her parents, husband, two children, and three siblings.
Surviving is four of her six children, Judy Head and husband Richard of Gainesboro, Margie Roberts of Carthage; two sons, David Spivey and wife Joann of the Riddleton Community, Wayne Spivey and wife Debbie of Carthage; sister, Evelyn Hughes Burgess of Carthage; twelve grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchildren.
