Obit – Mary Elizabeth Gwaltney Hodges
MARY ELIZABETH GWALTNEY HODGES- A perennially joyful and loving person, Mary Elizabeth Gwaltney Hodges left this life and passed to the next on May 8, 2026.
She was born in Hickman Tennessee on May 25, 1931 to Campbell and Tassie Gwaltney. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Lebanon, Tennessee, where she attended school and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1948.
She married classmate Ray Hodges in 1950 and they had a son, Jim, in 1958. Even though they divorced in 1977, Mary and Ray were friendly until the day of her passing.
Mary leaves behind her son Jim, daughter-in-law, Suzanne, and two grandchildren, Jen and Danny Hodges. She also leaves a number of dear friends to cherish her memory.
Mary was pre- deceased by two very special friends. The first was Barry Spears, a high school beau with whom she reunited in 1978. The second was Tom Stevens, a loving companion and friend who accompanied her during the last third of her life.
Funeral services were Tuesday, May 12 at 1 PM, preceded by visitation from 11 AM until one at Partlow Funeral Chapel. Interment was in Hickman, Tennessee (Smith County) at Baird Cemetery (50 Sykes Rd., 38567). Pastor Phil Lundy of Tulip Grove Baptist Church in Hermitage officiated.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mary’s memory to Tulip Grove Baptist Church, or Notes 4 Notes, a nation-wide nonprofit organization that brings music to underserved youth (NotesforNotes.org).
