Obit – Mrs. Claudine Johnson Crawford
With a life well lived, the Lord called Mrs. Claudine Johnson Crawford to her heavenly home at the age of 87 at 9:18 a.m. Tuesday morning May 19th at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Mrs. Crawford was admitted to Vandy May 9th for injuries suffered in a fall while she and her daughter Debra were visiting Cades Cove and had stopped at a restaurant in Townsend to eat and Mrs. Claudine fell and fractured her pelvis.
Her pastor, Bishop Steve Warren, officiated at the 11 a.m. Friday morning May 22nd funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial followed beside her husband Thomas in the Veterans Garden at the Wilson County Memorial Park in Lebanon.
Born Claudine Johnson in the Moss Community of Clay County on September 1, 1938, she was the last surviving of eleven children of the late Claude Johnson who died at the age of 67 on November 12, 1972 and Elsie Lee Hawkins Johnson who died at the age of 71 on November 19, 1983.
Mrs. Crawford grieved the loss of two of her three children, a daughter, Dorothy Crawford Roberson who died May 12, 2006 at the age of 44 and a son, Glenn Thomas Crawford, who died at the age of 59 on November 23, 2025.
Her husband, New Middleton native Thomas Ezra Crawford, preceded her in death on February 6, 1999 at the age of 72.
The ten siblings, four brothers and seven sisters, preceding in death were; James Harold Johnson who died April 26, 1989 at the age of 52, Charles Johnson who died December 5, 1992, Billy Lee Johnson who died November 12, 2008 at the age of 58, William Edgar Johnson who died June 8, 2009, Lucille Johnson Shoemake who died October 17, 2004 at the age of 73, Pauline Johnson Goolsby, a twin to Claudine, died March 23, 2002 at the age of 63, Eldridge Christine Johnson Smith who died August 24, 2022 at the age of 81, Linda Caroline (Carol) Johnson Walls who died August 5, 2006 at the age of 58, Sara Katherine Johnson Strong who died April 3, 2016 at the age of 84 and Lizzie Lou Johnson Dawes who died April 2, 2026 at the age of 72.
Mrs. Crawford was a loving mother and sister who cared deeply for all of her family members.
She was a Christian lady and was a member of the Faith Chapel in Baxter of which her daughter was also member.
Mrs. Crawford had previously been employed at the former Carthage Shirt Corporation, the former Hartman Luggage in Lebanon and in 1998 with over twenty-five years of service retired from the former Lebanon Woolen Mills.
She is survived by her daughter and constant companion and with whom she resided, Debra Crawford of Smithville and four grandchildren, Ashley Nicole Dickens and husband Michael, Justin Crawford, William Thomas “T. J.” Jones, Matthew Thomas all of Lebanon; seven great-grandchildren, Liberty Pickens, Haylee Pickens, Raylynn Pickens and Jonathan Pickens, Alexus, Shelby, and Gabriel Jones all of Lebanon; sister-in-law, Ruby Crawford of the New Middleton Community; fur babies, Sassy, Rowdy, and Little Bit; special friends, Genetta Smith, Fred Bane, and Tammy Stifler.
