CHAMPIONS RETURN

By Shea Haile Courier Sports

SOUTH CARTHAGE — The Gordonsville Tigerettes softball team, the defending two-time Class 1A state champions, will return to their natural habitat this week as the program secured its fourth consecutive trip to Murfreesboro and the 1A State Tournament. Big Blue clinched their spot in the state tourney with a 7-0 Class 1A  Sectional victory over Whitwell at Crump Paris Park last Saturday night.

With their 22nd shutout of the season, the Tigerettes improved to 34-1 overall and are set to battle Halls in the opening round of the state tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 at McKnight Park’s Field #1.

“Tonight was a great game,” said Gordonsville head softball coach Jonathan Bush. “We were able to get out of some difficult scenarios. This was a hard fought game.”

Bush continued, “I think this was a testament to our schedule we played this year. We played some very tough games and were able to put the girls in some hard spots. I think that showed tonight.”

Big Blue advanced after another clutch postseason performance from senior and University of Tennessee signee Kailey Plumlee who struck out 14 batters. Whitwell had four scattered hits in the contest as the veteran lefty escaped bases loaded situations in the fifth and sixth innings with strikeouts.
