BUSINESSMAN/CIVIC LEADER PASSES

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon for longtime businessman and well-known civic leader Paul Hackett.

The 78-year-old Tanglewood resident passed away Friday at his home.

Hackett was diagnosed as having cancer in June of 2016.

President and CEO of Citizens Bank – which has offices in Carthage, South Carthage, Gordonsville, Sparta and Cookeville – Hackett’s banking career began in July of 1963, becoming president and CEO in 1984.

Hackett was a graduate of the Vanderbilt School of Banking and the Louisiana State University School of Banking in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Active in his community, Hackett served as chairman of the Smith County Industrial Board, was a charter member of the Smith County Fire Department, longtime member of the Carthage Fire Department, member of the Smith County Recuse Squad (having served as president and treasurer), a charter member of the Smith County 911 Board of Directors and a charter member and past president of the South Carthage Civitan Club (member emeritus).
