COUNTY PROPERTY TAX DECREASE ON TRACK
As the County’s Budget and Finance Committee finalizes its 2021-2022 fiscal year budget, it appears a county property tax decrease is imminent. Exactly how much of a decrease had not been decided as of Friday, but an amount was expected to be determined as soon as this week. The Budget and Finance Committee is studying the feasibility of lowering the county’s $2.73 property tax rate by as much as the 25 cents which County Mayor Jeff Mason has been advocating in recent weeks.
Friday, the committee was waiting to for additional figures from the county’s finance department before a recommendation is finalized to present to the full commission, says Budget and Finance Committee Chairman Ron Shumake. The Budget and Finance Committee is expected to have a recommendation to present to commissioners at its next regularly scheduled meeting Monday night (June 14). Commissioners can approve the budget and set the county property tax rate as proposed by the Budget and Finance Committee during the meeting or delay approval until a follow-up meeting.
