Budget cuts made by school board; looking to please commissioners

The county’s school board met in special session Saturday (August 22) and rescinded a $35.5 million budget it had approved just days before.

The proposed $35.5 million was to be presented to the county commission Monday (August 24) night.

Before Monday night’s meeting, the school board met in special session on Saturday morning and rescinded the $35.5 million proposed budget, agreeing on various cuts to the proposal, trimming it to $35 million.

The county commission met in special session on August 10 and went into recess until Monday (August 24) night because a school budget had not been approved.

During the August 10 special called meeting, county commissioners approved various county department budgets, a state certified property tax rate of $1.3023 and set the school system’s budget at $35 million.

The $35 million is halfway between the board of education’s revenue projection of $33 million and its proposed expenditures of $37 million, county officials say.
