Taking a closer look at cuts to school system’s budget

During this summer’s budget hearings, county commission set a spending cap of $35 million for the school system’s proposed 2026-2027 fiscal year budget.

In order for the school system to meet the county commission $35 million budget cap, the county’s school board had to make several expenditure reductions to its original budget proposal.

Some of the cuts included a reduction and/or adjustment in contracts for certain employees.

Also, there was reduction to capital outlay and transportation funds.

In addition, there were reductions in school board member pay and certain coaching position pay.

The most extreme school system budget reductions  were made during a special called school board meeting held on a Saturday in August.

Those cuts were made through a series of motions approved by school board members.

Here’s a closer look at those budget cuts  made during that Saturday meeting.

The first motion which was approved:

This motion dealt with employee insurance coverage payments.
