Lady Owls tab impressive 71-36 victory in “The Jungle”

GORDONSVILLE — Last Friday night, the Smith County High Lady Owls and Gordonsville Tigerettes girls basketball programs shared the hardwood for the first of two rivalry meetings during the 2023-2024 season.

The Black-and-Gold exploded on a 26-14 second quarter run to seize control and eventually defeat the Tigerettes at GHS, 71-36.

Smith Co. reached the .500 mark with a 4-4 record. The Tigerettes fell to 1-5 with their fifth straight loss. 

Gordonsville was plagued with turnovers and shooting woes from the field. As a unit, the Tigerettes connected on 13-of-38 field goals which equals a 34 percent shooting percentage. 

The Lady Owls were efficient tossing in 30-of-53 field goal attempts for a 57 percent shooting percentage. 

Smith Co. was led in scoring by freshman guard Emry Jones who tossed in 21 points. Chloe Collins followed with 17 points including three triples. Merissa Spivey completed the double figure scoring for the Lady Owls with 10. Airyn Enoch and Catie Belle McCarter tallied eight points apiece. Julia Dickerson posted four points while Hailey Overstreet tallied two points. Dacey Claywell concluded the scoring with a first quarter free throw. 

Gordonsville sophomore Makenzie Herron was the only Tigerette in double figures with 14 points. Kamara Young added eight points while Kali Underwood posted seven. Kaka Roberts added four points while Lucy Manor posted two. Madison Askew concluded the Big Blue scoring with a free throw.
