Traffic alert; Construction work taking place in South Carthage
By Eddie West Staff Writer
Construction to correct a storm water drainage problem which leads to the flooding of a section of Main Street South in South Carthage is well underway.
The work is taking place in a low-lying area just south of the Carthage Church of God which is prone to flooding.
During periods of heavy rainfall, water runs off hillsides into a creek bed which flows underneath the city street.
The structure, which runs beneath the road, is outdated (made of stone) and not large enough for the runoff to pass through. This leads to flooding and, at times, closure of the city street.
The runoff eventually flows into the Caney Fork River.
Mayor Joey Nixon said the city was able to obtain a state grant to assist in funding the project.
All homes and churches in the affected area are accessible while construction is taking place.
However, Main Street South is closed to through traffic.
