REGION REBOUND; Owls end three game skid with Homecoming, 4-2A opener triumph over Jackson County

CARTHAGE — The Smith County High Owls football team was looking to break a three game losing skid as they hosted Jackson County last Friday night in Homecoming 2025.

The Owls were coming off their poorest performance of the year in a 26 point loss at Westmoreland as they faced the Blue Devils in their Region 4-2A opener.

Both teams’ defenses were stingy as the Black-and-Gold did not commit a turnover in their 18-7 victory.

Smith Co. improved to 2-3 overall while Jackson Co. dropped to 3-2.

Riley Martin led the Owls’ offense as he threw for 123 yards and a score. Martin connected on 10-of-14 pass attempts.

“I think Riley did a good job extending some plays with his legs, picking up some key first downs,” said Smith County head coach Matt Dyer. “Cole Hackett and Riley connected on some throws as well. We did a much better job in pass protection, that was a good job by Coach (Coty) Jett and our offensive line.”

Martin, who led the Owls with 34 yards rushing, found his favorite target Cole Hackett five times for 88 yards.
