SOUTH CARTHAGE — For the fifth time in the program’s history, the Gordonsville High Tigers baseball team is headed to the Class 1A State Tournament after sweeping their sectional series against Whitwell last Wednesday at Crump Paris Park
Because of inclement weather and Whitwell graduation, the two squads played a doubleheader Wednesday.
Big Blue claimed an 11-0 five inning victory in game two to clinch their first appearance in the state tournament since 2018. In two games, Gordonsville outscored the red-and-white clad Tigers 19-2 as the unit is one of the final eight standing in Class 1A.
“I am just honored to be here,” said GHS baseball head coach Travis Humes who is in his first year at the helm. “It is a great place to be. I am thankful for all of our kids, our fans and our administration. I am thankful for and blessed with the opportunity God has just given me.”
The run-rule victory clinched the first ever sectional / substate triumph for Gordonsville baseball at home.
“They accomplished something today that has never been done in the program’s history said Humes. “The dog pile at home was the vision, that was the purpose and that was the expectation. We executed the plan and I am so proud of them.”
The District 7A champion will battle West Tennessee power Mckenzie in the opening round of the 1A tournament. First pitch for the Tigers and Rebels is slated for 6:30 Tuesday at Rockvale High School.
