GORDONSVILLE — The county’s two junior high football teams met for the second straight year in Gordonsville last Friday night to open regular season play.

The Tigers posted a dramatic overtime victory a year ago and were looking for a second straight win on their home turf.

Gordonsville led the entire way in posting a 28-6 victory as they went on a 20-0 run in the game’s final three quarters.

“This rivalry is so much fun to get to be a part of,” said Gordonsville Junior High football coach Adam Shaw. “There was a great crowd from both sides of the river and the kids played their tails off. I was proud of the effort our kids played with from start to finish. We played physical and limited the sloppy play that you often see in season openers.”

Shaw continued, “Coach (David) Reid does a great job of game planning each year we play and the Owls made several explosive plays throughout the game, but for the most part our guys stayed poised and fought back each time the momentum shifted their way. Coach (Stephen) Jackson and Coach (Jonathan) Peoples called great games on each side of the ball. We’ve got some things to clean up but tonight was a nice way to start what we hope to be a great year.”

Ryder Roberts led the Big Blue with 117 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown. He also added another score as he was 2-of-3 passing for 97 yards.

Cason Stinnett had two huge long yardage plays with both resulting in touchdowns on a 92 yard pass reception and 79 yard run. Micah Walker added six carriers for 42 yards and a score.
