TIGERS PASS REGION TEST

By Shea Haile Courier Sports

GORDONSVILLE — The Gordonsville High Tigers football team continued their early season dominance with a 48-14 Region 4-1A opening victory over Jo Byrns.

Big Blue remained unbeaten and improved to 4-0 overall. The unit began region play with a victory as the Tigers outgained the Red Devils 403 to 214 — in the impressive outing last Friday night at Turney Ford Field.

“The most important thing was coming out fast,” said Gordonsville head football coach Stephen Jackson about his Big Blue unit who had a 27-7 lead at halftime. “The last couple of years against these guys, we really have not started fast. To their credit, they would do a great job and keep the ball most of the first quarter. I thought our guys took that challenge and came out playing hard early on. We made plays offensively and defensively — and we kept going. Our young guys were able to get in the ball game late and they did a great job.”

The Tigers featured their potent rushing attack as senior Bryson Grisham eclipsed the 100 yard mark for the fourth consecutive week — tallying 173 yards on 17 carries. Grisham averaged 10 yards per rush while posting two touchdowns on the ground.

The Gordonsville ground attack netted 260 yards on 31 rushes — eight yards per carry. Jemario Williams tallied three touchdowns via the rush as the junior speedster had 51 yards on five attempts. Freshman Turner Bucher led the reserves with 33 yards on six rushes including an 11 yard touchdown rush.

“Our offensive line is doing a great job blocking,” said Jackson. “Jemario (Williams) has been dealing with a little ankle injury from week two so he has gotten better from that. He just has that little extra speed that if he hits a hole, he is going to take it to the house. Jemario is doing good. B (Grisham) had another great night carrying the football and Turner Bucher came in and had a good night.”

“But it all comes down to the linemen blocking and staying on blocks.”
