CARTHAGE — The Smith County High Owls football team returned from a bye week to face Region 2-2A regular season champion Tellico Plains last Friday night at Owl Stadium.

Smith Co. entered the game at 2-6 while the Bears made the long trip from East Tennessee and were 5-3 riding a four game winning streak.

The Owls played inspired football and just like a season ago saw the Bears score late in the fourth quarter for a five point victory, 20-15.

The Owls had Senior Night before the game as SCHS had 10 seniors — Daniel Bane, Gabriel Mayers, Joshua Hernandez, Josh Harmon, Bradley Pickett, Ben Howell, Luke Howell, Will Barnes, Eric Shaw and Konner Davis.

“I’m proud of the way our guys played hard for four quarters,” said Smith County High head coach Matt Dyer. “They gave themselves a chance to win it in the fourth quarter and that’s what you want, guys playing hard and have a chance to win in the fourth. That’s a good Tellico team and they are region champions in their region. We had too many mistakes early in the game. But we kept fighting and making plays.”
