GORDONSVILLE — The Gordonsville High Tigers football team, tabbed as one of the top contenders for the Class 1A title, clashed with the Monterey Wildcats last Friday night at Turney Ford Field.
The Wildcats shocked Big Blue and snared a 21-0 victory in a rain-hampered week six encounter.
Monterey churned out 248 rushing yards as 46 of their 50 offensive snaps featured the ground attack.
Offensive miscues and missed opportunities was a theme for the Tigers as the hosts committed two turnovers — an interception and a lost fumble.
Gordonsville had two first half drives reach inside the Wildcats’ 10 yard line. Monterey’s defense bowed up on both occasions with two fourth down stops.
“We took the ball and did what we did the last few weeks — we drove the ball down the football field,” said Gordonsville football head coach Stephen Jackson, “When you get inside the 10, you have to capitalize on it. It is a situation where you have to be able to run the football and stick it in.”
Jackson continued, “They did a great job of when we got inside the 10 — bending but not breaking. They came out with a lot of enthusiasm after losing three games in-a-row and played really hard. I thought we played really hard but we did not execute well.”
