Obit – Mr. James Hunter

A Southern gentleman with a smile and laughter as a part of his outgoing personality, has died at the age of 71. Mr. James Hunter of the New Middleton Community departed this life at the Highpoint Health – Riverview Hospital in Carthage surrounded by his family where he was admitted October 8th with a fractured hip. He was pronounced deceased at 1:47 a.m. Thursday morning October 17, 2024.

Bro. Mark Stinnett officiated at the 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon October 20th funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Brush Creek Cemetery.

Born James Edward Hunter in the Lock Seven Community on July 7, 1953, he was one of three sons of longtime Carthage Police officer, the late William James “Bill” Hunter who died December 27, 1979 at the age of 57 and Sarah Lorelle Presley Hunter Mofield who died October 30, 2012 at the age of 78.

Mr. Hunter was a 1971 graduate of the Smith County High School. His major was building trades and he was a member of the Vocational Industrial Club his final three years in high school and served as the club president his junior year and reporter his senior year. He was also a member of the Pep Club and was an usher for the junior play.

The statement was made of him in the ’71 annual; “Life is short, but sweet.”

Following high school graduation, he was employed for three years at the former Carthage Shirt Corporation.

Mr. Hunter was united in marriage to New Middleton Community native, the former Cynthia Gay (Cindy) White. The ceremony was performed by then Smith County General Sessions Judge, Jackie Preston at Judge Preston’s home on September 2, 1989. 

He loved anything to do with the outside, coon hunting in his early years, the farm life, and just being around people. He was an International tractor farmer through and through. He stated that tractors were red and, on the farm, grass was all that was supposed to be green.

He was a truck driver owning and operating his own dump truck and was of the Southern Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife Cindy of just over thirty five years are seven children, Michelle Goodwin and husband Corey of Spencer, TN, Jimmy Hunter of Hartsville, April Copas and husband Nathan of Gamaliel, Kentucky, Chris Bunch and wife Daphne of Beech Grove, Indiana, Lorie Moss and husband James of Red Boiling Springs, Martha Sampson and husband Thomas of the Hermitage Springs Community, Barbara Smith and husband Matt of McMinnville; two brothers, Rickey Hunter and wife Sheila of Lafayette, Donnie Hunter and wife Cheryl of the Shop Springs Community; twenty one grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

The Hunter family has requested memorials to the Brush Creek Cemetery Mowing Fund.
