EAGLES RUMBLE PAST OWLS

By Terry Collins Courier Sports

WESTMORELAND — The Smith County High Owls football team travelled to Westoreland for a Region 3-2A matchup last Friday night.

The Owls had won the previous four matchups over the Eagles by posting shutouts during that span. Westmoreland, who beat East Robertson 7-6 15 days earlier, needed a win over the Owls to clinch the region championship.

The hosts ground game proved to be brutal in their 35-6 victory over Smith Co. to improve to 7-1 overall.

“I’m proud of our players and coaches for their effort in this game and this week,” said Smith County head football coach Matt Dyer. “It is always a difficult week when you are on fall break, out of school and still have a game to play. Families go out of town and it creates an adverse situation, but I felt like our guys responded well to the week and didn’t let it affect them. Last week we had homecoming and our guys got to have fun throughout the week, enjoy the Friday parade, all the things that came with it and still had the maturity to lock in and play the game and get a win. This week with fall break, our guys responded well with a good week of practice during fall break.”

Dyer continued, “We show some good flashes and then a penalty or negative play gets us off schedule. Westmoreland is a really good team, they are ranked in the top ten in 2A, with 60 kids on their roster and fourteen seniors with a lot of experience.”
