CARTHAGE -— The top-seeded Defeated Braves squared off against second-seeded Gordonsville last Saturday night in Carthage for the Smith County Elementary boys championship.
The Braves came into the game with an impressive 20-2 record and were the top-seed in the tourney.
Defeated outscored the Tigers in every quarter en route to a 47-21 victory to improve to 21-2 overall.
The Braves were led by Noah Young with 13 including three treys. Brody Chilton had nine points and was a big defensive presence inside. Knox Jones tallied eight points while Bryant Dias scored seven. Eli McCormick made four points while Peyton Oliver tossed in a trey. Jacob Testa with two and Tucker Dillard with one completed the scoring for Defeated.
“It means everything for my boys,” said Defeated head coach Wayne Young. “They worked hard since getting beat last year in the finals. So they came with the attitude that they were not going to get beat. They worked so hard this summer on everything. They were in the gym every night. They texted me and wanted to go to the gym to shoot and get better. There is not a better group of kids around than these boys.”
“We came off of a big win last night (Friday quarterfinal win over Pickett County at James C. Haile Tournament) and we had to get ready for this game. Gordonsville is a good team and a very physical team. I knew it would be a battle. I am proud of them. They played well.”
Young discussed his unit’s improvement throughout the year.
“B (Bryant) Dias is one of the most improved kids that we have,” said Young. “He put a lot of time in the gym. Big Brody (Chilton) came in and he has improved tremendously. They have all gotten better and everyone can see on the court that they have. These boys worked hard to get better.”
