Obit – Mr. Mike Turnipseed
We can shed tears that a dear brother, Mike Turnipseed is gone, or we can rejoice that he lived and left a lasting memory and is gone too soon, but to be with the Savior that he longed to meet. At 12:55 a.m. Tuesday morning a call to Smith County E-911 for assistance after his son and wife discovered him unresponsive in the hallway of their Hiwassee Road home.
Mr. Turnipseed was pronounced deceased at 1:50 a.m. on August 25, 2026 at the Highpoint Health – Riverview with Ascension St. Thomas Emergency Department at the age of 66.
He was at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Funeral services from the Hartsville Missionary Baptist Church were conducted Saturday morning August 29th with the church pastor, Eld. Barney Allison assisted by Eld. Beau Beechboard officiating. Burial followed in the Garden of Everlasting Life at the Smith County Memorial Gardens with Jeff Allison reading the scripture and Dylan Dixon leading the closing prayer.
One of three children, two sons and a daughter of Kathleen (Kathy) Hammond Turnipseed of South Carthage and the late Charles Eugene Turnipseed who departed this life on November 6, 2008 at the age of 71, he was born Michael Eugene Turnipseed in Newnan in Coweta County, Georgia on June 1, 1960.
The Turnipseed family relocated to Smith County in 1968 where Mike’s father was in management with the William L. Bonnell Company.
Mr. Turnipseed was a member of the 1978 graduating class at Smith County High School. There he played football his freshman year, was in the Spanish club, where he served as vice-president his sophomore year and was a member of the library club his junior and senior year.
At the Hartsville Missionary Baptist Church, he was united in marriage to the former Jackie Rena Herr with the church pastor, Eld. Barney Allison officiating. The marriage was May 22, 1999.
The most important day in Mr. Turnipseed’s life was when he was saved while working at Mill # 4 at the AVCO Corporation in 1983. He was baptized into the full fellowship of the Plunketts Creek Missionary Baptist Church and transferred his membership by letter to the Hartsville Missionary Baptist Church.
Mr. Turnipseed, an experienced tool and die maker and machinist, established his own business in the Rock City Community in 1990 which is known as Sure Fit Tool and Machine Company.
Surviving in addition to his mother Kathy and wife Jackie of over twenty-seven years, is their son Michael Seth Turnipseed of the Hiwassee Community; two daughters, Stephanie Spurlin of Scottsville, Kentucky, Kendra Nixon and husband Adam Graves of Adolphus, Kentucky; sister, Lisa Applegate of Lebanon; brother, David Turnipseed and wife Rita of Cookeville; three grandchildren, Kendell Steffen, Kolton Graves of Adolphus, KY, Aspen Spurlin of Scottsville, KY.
The Turnipseed family has requested memorials to the Hartsville Missionary Baptist Church.
