WATERTOWN — In one of the area’s longest standing prep football rivalries, the Gordonsville High Tigers football team claimed their third straight win against the Watertown Purple Tigers with a 14-0 triumph last Friday night in Wilson County. 

The two adversaries played to a 0-0 deadlock in the first half before Big Blue posted two second half touchdowns and preserved their first shutout against the Purple Tigers since 2012 — a 48-0 win at Turney Ford Field.

Gordonsville improved to 2-0 and in the unit’s first two regular season outings they have outscored their opponents a combined 28-6 in the second half. 

“I thought they did a great job and the kids played so hard,” said Gordonsville High head football coach Stephen Jackson. “I was so impressed with what they were doing. They kept coming back over and over. We are so proud of the effort that they give. We have been talking about it — making sure we do not give up that explosive play. Our kids did a great job tonight of not giving up that explosive play. They kept battling and making plays.”

Jackson discussed the confidence gained from shutting out a dangerous Purple Tigers offense. 

“It is huge and it adds confidence in seeing if we just make them snap the ball again — we can make plays,” said Jackson. “It is all about the kids understanding — that they need to play hard every single play and to not give up the explosive plays.”
