Obit – Mrs. Martha Canter

A Nashville homemaker, Mrs. Martha Canter, was discovered deceased at the age of 83 at her Healey Drive home by a grandson on Wednesday afternoon December 6, 2023. She was pronounced deceased by a medical investigator from the Metro Medical Examiner Office at 4:21 p.m.

Funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home were conducted Monday afternoon December 11th with Wayne Patrick Lankford of Murfreesboro officiating. Burial followed beside her husband of almost fifty three years in section five at the Defeated Creek Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Canter was born July 28, 1940 in Gallatin and was reared in the Defeated Creek Community and was one of four children, two daughters and two sons of the late Harvey Henry Craighead who died at the age of 60 on May 20, 1967 and Flossie Lillian Lankford Craighead who died at the age of 44 on February 25, 1961 and was born Martha Agnes Craighead.

Mrs. Canter was preceded in death by all three of her siblings, the sister Velma Craighead Thrasher and the two brothers, Elmer Harvey Craighead who died December 14, 2003 at the age of 70 and Bobby Gene Craighead who died September 4, 2010 at the age of 61. 

On May 7, 1955 she was united in marriage to Defeated Creek Community native Glenn Allen Canter who preceded her in death at the age of 71 on March 8, 2008.

Mr. and Mrs. Canter had a son whom preceded them in death. Charles Allen Canter died July 19, 1998 at the age of 41.

Two daughters-in-law also preceded Mrs. Canter in death. Carol Sue Thomas Canter, Mike’s wife, who died April 26, 2023 at the age of 69 and Deborah Sue “Debbie” Jones Canter, Charles’s wife, who died February 28, 2013 at the age of 57.

Mrs. Canter was of the Missionary Baptist faith and had attended the McFerrin Missionary Baptist Church in Madison.

Before her retirement she was employed at the former Rudy Farms in Donelson which was located on property which is now the Opryland complex.

Surviving is Mrs. Canter’s son, Michael Glenn “Mike” Canter of Murfreesboro; two grandchildren, Edward Canter and Justin Greene of Gallatin; Jennifer Busey and husband Josh of Murfreesboro; three great-grandchildren, Deven Canter, Autumn Canter-Busey and Cheyenne Busey.
