Obit – Mrs. Ethel Kelley

Mrs. Ethel Kelley age 97 of South Carthage was pronounced deceased at 9:25 p.m. Sunday evening February 11, 2024 at the Smith County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage where she had made her home since November 3, 2022.

Funeral services were conducted by Pastor Lanny Thomas at 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon February 16th at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial followed beside her first husband and the father of their late son at the Brush Creek Cemetery.

Born in the Flynns Lick Community of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Sarah Elizabeth “Lizzie” Young Mahaney who died at the age of 88 on February 21, 1993 and was one of thirteen children of the late Pink Edward Mahaney Sr. who died at the age of 89 on July 15, 1980.

The mother of Mrs. Kelley’s three oldest half siblings, Mrs. Clennie Lawson Mahaney. died in 1918 at the age of 29.

Eight of her full sisters and brothers preceding her in death were Willard Mahaney, Georgia Dee Mahaney Hubbard who died at the age of 25 on June 10, 1957, Opal Mahaney Duke who died at the age of 68 on September 21, 2005, Ruby Mahaney Meadows who died February 11, 2008 at the age of 78, Frank Wilson Mahaney who died March 12, 1999 at the age of 54, Robert Key Mahaney who died September 11, 1993 at the age of 46, Pink Edward “Red Bone” Mahaney Jr. who died June 19, 2014 at the age of 79 and Mitchell Mahaney who died July 22, 1951 at the age of 26 as a result of drowning. Also preceding her in death were three half siblings, Kelly Baugh Mahaney who died at the age of 10 from scarlet fever on September 14, 1920, John Columbus Mahaney who died at the age of 65 on December 26, 1968, and Stella Mai Mahaney Young who died at the age of 80 on July 17, 1995.

Her first husband, Fred Dalton “Bob” Paris preceded her death on November 24, 1974 at the age of 53.

On August 20, 1977 she was united in marriage to Lancaster Community native Virgil Spence Kelley, who preceded her in death on November 10, 1991 at the age of 79.

Mrs. Kelley was also preceded in death by her only child, Billy Earl Paris who died from kidney failure on February 16, 2022 at the age of 73 and by her daughter-in-law, Mary Mae Marie Cobb Paris who died at the age of 59 on August 23, 2009.

Mrs. Kelley was a Christian of the Pentecostal faith.

She retired from the dietary department at the former Carthage General Hospital where she was employed for over twenty five years.

Mrs. Kelley is survived by a granddaughter, Heather Paris and fiancée Charles Stewart of Carthage; grandson, Robert Paris and wife Rachel Angel Paris of South Carthage; great-grandson, Jordan Paris of Carthage; brother, Ernest Mahaney of South Carthage, the last surviving of the thirteen children.
