Obit – Mrs. Jo Helen Nixon
Mrs. Jo Helen Nixon, a longtime resident and homemaker of South Carthage, departed this life at 9:04 a.m. Saturday morning June 15, 2024 at the age of 83 at the N. H. C. Healthcare in Cookeville where she had made her home since February 22, 2022.
The funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon June 20th at 3 p.m. from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial followed beside her husband Anthony at the Davis Cemetery in the Russell Hill Community.
She was one of eight children, six daughters and two sons, of the late Johnnie Edward Woodard who died at the age of 75 on June 14, 1977 and Flossie Irene Chaffin Woodard who died at the age of 82 on January 13, 1993 and was born Jo Helen Woodard in the Austin Hollow on the Smith County end.
Her first sibling to die was Johnnie Edward Jr. who died November 27, 1979 at the age of 49 and five sisters followed, Robbie Jean Woodard West who died at the age of 67 on January 31, 2011, Jewel Woodard Cox who died at the age of 91 on July 3, 2017, Mary Frances Woodard Woods who died at the age of 90 on November 13, 2017, Ruby Mai Woodard West who died at the age of 88 on October 27, 2021, and Pauline Woodard Kinslow who died February 14, 2022 three days before her 86th birthday.
She was united in marriage to Difficult Community native, William Anthony Nixon who died September 8, 2006 at the age of 63. They were united in marriage at the Defeated Creek Missionary Baptist Church on December 9, 1961 by then pastor, Eld. Arnett Gregory. They were married almost forty five years.
Mrs. Nixon attended the Russell Hill Missionary Baptist Church before her illness.
She is survived by a daughter, Lisa Nixon Stewart of Cleveland, Georgia; two grandsons, Josh Jenkins and Stephen Smithson both of Carthage; brother, Donnie Lee Woodard and wife Anna of the Russell Hill Community; sister-in-law, Shelby Jean Russell Woodard of the Russell Hill Community; brother-in-law, Wayne West of the Tanglewood Community, Brother-in-law, Michael Nixon and wife Linda of the Tanglewood Community.
