The Gordonsville High Tigerettes and Smith County  High Lady Owls first volleyball encounter of the 2024 season featured a back-and-forth five set classic match. 

Big Blue captured the first and third sets to take a 2-1 advantage. The Lady Owls continued to fight and rebounded with a 25-17 win in the fourth set. 

In the fifth set, the Tigerettes found themselves staring at a potential defeat — trailing 14-11 with the Lady Owls searching for the match point. 

Smith County appeared to have the game-winning point. However, after a discussion among the game officials – the referees cited a violation during the sequence and negated the Lady Owls’ game-winning point. 

Gordonsville rebounded with five unanswered points to claim a 16-14 set five victory and claim the in-county match, 3-2. 

Derionna Bell led the victorious Tigerettes with 16 kills. Ashlyn Naylor added nine  kills and two blocks. Callie Dillard posted eight kills and nine aces. Christina Ray added three kills as Melinda Holder tallied five aces while Brooke Briggs and Paisley Underwood finished with three aces and two aces respectively. Holder and Dillard posted 24 digs each as Gordonsville improved to 12-1 overall.
