CELINA — It was the fourth season in a row that the Gordonsville High Tigers football team and the Clay County High Bulldogs met in the regular season finale with the Region 4-1A crown on the line.
Last Friday night in Celina, the Bulldogs mounted a furious fourth quarter comeback and overcame two 14 point deficits to claim a 42-35 victory over Big Blue.
Adversity arose for the Tigers as injuries struck the unit. Starting quarterback J Foster and top rusher Jemario Williams left the matchup in the second quarter with injuries on the same play. At the time of their injuries, Gordonsville held a 21-14 lead as Foster and Williams were responsible for all three scores.
In the fourth quarter, second string tailback and Gordonsville’s leading rusher in the contest Turner Bucher was lost to injury as well.
“I thought our kids played with unbelievable effort,” said Gordonsville High head football coach Stephen Jackson. “That is what I talked to them about at the end. I love them and I love effort that they gave tonight. They faced a lot of adversity. Some teams would have probably quit but our kids had a chance to go down and win it at the end. That is all you can ask for with as much adversity that we went through. The kids played hard, we just came up on the short end.”
