Obit – Mr. Shannon Shoulders

Mr. Shannon Shoulders age 60 of the Tanglewood Community was pronounced deceased on arrival at the Highpoint Health – Riverview Medical Center Emergency Room at 4:33 p.m. Sunday afternoon November 24, 2024. He was discovered unresponsive at his Crescent Boulevard home by his neighbor and friend Joe Nixon.

Mr. Shoulders was at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home where his funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning November 27, 2024 with Eld. Gary Drennon and Eld. Rickey Hall officiating. Interment followed beside his parents and sister at the Poley Beasley Cemetery in the Graveltown Community.

He was born Shannon Taylor Shoulders in Carthage on December 24, 1963 and was the only son of the late, ordained Missionary Baptist preacher, Eld. Billy Joe Shoulders who died January 7, 2020 at the age of 84 and Ruth Perlyne Jones Shoulders who died March 28, 2017 at the age of 78.

His only sibling, a sister Jolonda Lynn Shoulders Smith, died at the age of 31 on November 19, 1992.

Mr. Shoulders was a member of the 1982 graduating class at Smith County High School. He played football his freshman year, was a member of the Spanish club and pep club and his senior year was business manager for the ’82 Owl Yearbook, was selected as Who’s Who among American High School Students, and also his senior year he was a member of the office staff and participated in Homecoming.

He was saved at the age of 16 and was baptized in December of 1979 into the full fellowship of the Russell Hill Missionary Baptist Church where he remained a member until death.

Whether they were winning or losing, Shannon was an avid Vanderbilt University sports supporter.

He looked forward to Friday nights when he and his friends, Jerry Harper, the late Tim Williams and Joe Nixon would meet and eat, usually at the Rojas Restaurant, and if you were near their table, you could tell they were having fun. 

He was a retired press operator for Graphic Packaging with a career that spanned twenty-seven years.

Surviving is a nephew, Charles Smith and wife Sara of the Double Springs Community; great-niece, Lydia Joy Smith and soon to be another great-niece, Haisel Ann Smith; several cousins.

The Shoulders family requested memorials to the Poley Beasley Cemetery Mowing Fund.
