Committee, school board at odds

By Eddie West Staff Writer

The county’s Budget and Finance Committee and school board are at odds over the school system’s proposed 2026-2027 fiscal year budget.

During a meeting held Thursday night, the Budget Committee and Finance Committee voted down a proposed 2026-2027 fiscal year school budget which the school board had approved by a 6-2 vote days prior.

It was the second time the county’s budget and Finance Committee had rejected the school board’s proposed upcoming fiscal year budget during county budget talks which began earlier this year.

In June, the school board approved and sent a proposed 2026-2027 fiscal year budget to the County’s Budget and Finance Committee.

The school board’s proposal was rejected by the county’s Budget and Finance Committee which sent it back to the school board, asking for more cuts.

On Monday (July 13) night of last week, the school board met in special session and approved a revised proposed 2026-2027 fiscal year budget, sending it back to the county’s Budget and Finance Committee which failed to approve the revised proposal, Thursday night.
