County looks to set budget for upcoming fiscal year in August

Discussion of a proposed 2026-2027 county budget by the full county commission is anticipated to take place during a meeting scheduled for Monday, August 10.  

Earlier this year, the county adopted a state certified property tax rate of $1.3023 for 2026 but that rate could change as the full county commission has yet to approve a 2026-2027 fiscal year budget.

The $1.3023 state certified rate comes as 2026 was a re-appraisal year for the county. The $1.3023 state certified rate is down from 2025’s $1.73310 county property tax rate. The lower state certified tax rate is suppose to bring in the same amount of tax revenue as 2025’s $1.73310 because of the increase in value of most properties located within the county.

The full county commission is expected to discuss the upcoming fiscal year county budget for the first time during the August 10 meeting.

Meanwhile, the 2026-2027 fiscal year school system budget will be unresolved going into the August 10 meeting.

On Monday (July 20) night of last week, the county’s school board voted to send a trimmed down $37,325,760 budget to the full county commission. 

Meanwhile, the county’s Budget and Finance Committee met on Thursday night (July 23) and continued to discuss the school system budget.
