Obit – Ms. Jean Sircy-Gibbs
A Vietnam veteran Army nurse, Ms. Jean Sircy-Gibbs of the Russell Hill Community died with her sister Eller at her bedside at 7:10 p.m. Saturday evening August 17, 2024 at the Palace in Red Boiling Springs. She was pronounced deceased at 7:55 p.m.
Funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home were conducted on Wednesday morning August 21st with her nephew, Eld. Dean Sircy officiating. Burial followed in the Davis Cemetery in the Russell Hill Community beside her sister, Bessie Sircy Enoch.
There was a military chapel service by American Legion Post # 57 of Carthage.
She was born Velma Jean Sircy on Sircy Ridge Lane at the historic Sircy family farm in the Russell Hill Community on Junee 16, 1943 and was of fourteen children of the late Henry Sircy who died at the age of 75 on January 19, 1976 and Mary Lilly Morman Sircy who died at the age of 76 on October 1, 1987.
Ms. Sircy-Gibbs was preceded in death by nine of her fourteen siblings. A brother, Fred Ray Sircy, just died at the age of 87 on August 5, 2024 and the other eight preceding her in death were Mamie Lee Sircy Kittrell who died November 30, 2015 at the age of 86, the first to die was Jula Mai Sircy who died at the age of 2 months on March 5, 1931, Carl Sircy who died at the age of 48 on February 9, 1990, George Henry Sircy who died at the age of 64 on May 4, 1997, Mary “Sis” Richardson who died at the age of 83 on February 16, 2011, Bessie Mai Enoch who died at the age of 77 on February 23, 2012, Bertha Lilly Thompson who died at the age of 89 on October 16, 2014 and Johnny Sircy who died at the age of 76 on July 15, 2015.
She attended Smith County High School where she received her General Education Degree.
Ms. Sircy-Gibbs proudly served our Country with the United States Women’s Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged at Fort George G. Meade Maryland on December 17. 1965 with three years and eleven days of service.
She was saved as a young girl and was baptized into the full fellowship of the Russell Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
She was inducted into the United States Army in Nashville on December 6, 1962 and was assigned to the Kimbrough Army Hospital at Fort George G. Meade Maryland military base from which she received her honorable Discharge on December 17, 1965.
Miss Sircy-Gibbs was a Tennessee Licensed Practical Nurse and worked for many years as a travel nurse before retiring in 1993 from Saint Thomas Hospital.
Surviving are four siblings, Eller Sircy, Herbert Sircy and wife Carolyn Martin Sircy all of the Russell Hill Community, Janie Sircy Croslin of Lebanon, Geraldine Sircy Likens of the Difficult Community.
The family has requested memorials to St. Jude of Memphis.
