BIG BLUE GRIT; Grisham’s breakout night, clutch defense boost GHS in fight against gutsy Purple Tigers

WATERTOWN — The first two weeks of the 2024 high school football season has featured its fair share of fourth quarter drama for the Gordonsville High Tigers.

The Tigers’ defense stood tall and helped preserve a 26-19 road victory over Wilson County rival Watertown last Friday night.

The Purple Tigers, who would have had the opportunity to tie the contest or go for a one point win with a touchdown and two-point conversion, drove deep inside Gordonsville territory with under 1:00 remaining.

Watertown had a first-and-goal at the seven yard line before a penalty, stuffed rush attempt, Big Blue tackle for loss and two incomplete passes snuffed out the unit’s comeback attempt.

“Our guys played as hard as they could all night long, gave great effort and fought,” said Gordonsville football head coach Stephen Jackson about the Big Blue Tigers’ triumph. “The ball was around the 10 yard line on those last plays and we have guys diving — knocking the ball out. Our kids play with so much effort and I love those guys. They are always going to play hard.”

Gordonsville never trailed in the rivalry encounter and held a two possession advantage on two occasions as the offensive unit was powered by dynamic running back Bryson Grisham.

The senior shredded Watertown’s defense with 256 yards on 31 carries including three scores via the ground attack. Grisham’s touchdown trio was highlighted by a 74 yard fourth quarter dash to pay dirt.

“He did a great job,” said Jackson. “He is a guy that the longer the game goes, the better he gets and better he sees the cuts. He is shifty and he is a guy that in all of fall camp and the last two games — has been able to give a big play and an explosive run play. That is huge to have on our team.”
