Rome bridge closing planned
By Eddie West Staff Writer
A long-awaited state bridge project located in the Rome community apparently will begin this week, according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT).
The project includes repair work to the bridge which crosses Roundlick Creek in the Rome community on Highway 70 (also referred to by the state as State Route 24) and will require periodic complete and partial lane closures.
Commonly referred to by local residents as the “Rome Bridge”, the bridge connects the Rome and Rock City communities and is located at the Rome Ferry site and is named the Dr. James E. Fisher Bridge.
Thousands of motorists use the bridge daily.
The repair work is a state project.
In December of last year, a Livingston company was awarded the contract for the repair work.
In its weekly update on state highway closures Thursday (August 29), TDOT noted the closures as being in Smith County on “State Highway 24/U.S. Highway 70-repair work of the bridge crossing U.S. 70 (State Route 24) over Roundlick Creek at mile marker 2.9— 3”.
TDOT notes the bridge will be closed on Friday, September 6 at 6 p.m. until 6 a.m., Monday, September 9.
