The Historic Smith County Courthouse in downtown Carthage is poised to make a return as a main focal point for the county with an extensive restoration project.

Plans are to restore the historic courthouse to its stately manor along with the addition of new technologically advanced features.

The project is being spurred by a $1.8 million state grant to assist in renovating the facility. The county will also provide additional funding.

Provided through a Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development’s (TNECD) Connected Community Facilities grant, funds will be used to rehabilitate the historic courthouse and installation of broadband and digital service, according to County Mayor Jeff Mason.

There are also plans for county commission meetings to return to the historic structure.

In a statement, Mayor Mason said, “This grant will allow us to replace the windows with more efficient models and the HVAC units. The first floor will be remodeled and used for offices and a free WI-FI room for citizens. One room will be designated for health screenings and telehealth visits. We will also remodel the second floor to be able to be used by the Smith County Commission for meetings and local businesses for trainings and meetings. Free WI-FI will be available on and around the courthouse grounds.”
