Obit – Mr. Donald Burnham Babbitt

 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. Donald Burnham Babbitt, age 81 of Sparta, TN. He passed peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday December 7, 2024. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Mr. Babbitt was born April 24, 1943, in Wellsville NY, a son of the late Burnham Babbitt and Helen Rifenburg. He married Mary Jane Fanton on February 3, 1962. He was preceded in death by daughter, Stephanie Valentine.

Mr. Babbitt worked for Dresser Rand as a machinist for 37 years, retiring in 2005.

Donald and Mary were married for 62 years. They had the kind of love that is rare and were constantly by each other’s sides no matter what. He loved his wife and family dearly. One of his greatest joys in life was spending time with them. He will be remembered as a kind and considerate man that would do anything for anyone. The word “stranger” was not in his vocabulary. He was known for his sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. He loved being outdoors, gardening and horseback riding.

He will leave a great hole in the hearts and lives of many.

Mr. Babbitt is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Babbitt of Sparta, TN, and three children: Kimberly (Jeff) James of Savona, NY, Donald (Melissa) Babbitt II of Calhoun, TN, and Jessica Valentine of Alexandria, TN. Eleven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren also survive.

The family will hold a private service for Mr. Babbitt at a later date.
