GORDONSVILLE — Last Friday night at Turney Ford Field, the Gordonsville High Tigers football team and a rowdy contingent of Big Blue fans had “The Jungle” rocking in full force. GHS, while donning new alternate gray uniforms unveiled for the 2025 season, renewed their rivalry against familiar area foe the Watertown Purple Tigers and notched a 17-6 home opening victory as Big Blue moved to 2-0.
“I thought our kids played great and they played hard,” said Gordonsville head coach Stephen Jackson. “We had some adversity in the game but they never got their heads down. They just kept on playing and pulled out a great win.”
“It is a next man up mentality,” said Jackson about Tigers who stepped in for injured players. “We have a lot of guys who can play many different positions. One person goes down, we are always going to bring someone else in and I do not feel like we drop off a lot.”
Gordonsville leaned on an impressive defensive performance – holding the Purple Tigers scoreless until the fourth quarter. The Big Blue defense’s night was highlighted by two turnovers (a Camrix Stott interception and an Anthony Fuller recovered fumble) along with a critical momentum snatching goal line stand to end the first half.
“That was huge, to go in up 7-0 instead of tied 7-7, that was a momentum thing,” said Jackson, “If they score they are going into the break excited but they were down so we were excited. I thought it was a great stand and a great job by our defense to just keep playing every play.”
