CARTHAGE — The Smith County High Owls baseball team captured their first district championship since 2019 last Wednesday afternoon with an 11-1 five inning victory over York in Carthage.
“It means the world to this program and to myself,” said Smith Co. head baseball coach Malone Smith. “It was a goal we set at the beginning of the year and to place ourselves back at the front of this district. I think it has just shown that through our persistence we have continued to get better and grow, and now we have the hardware to prove it, and we will continue to work hard to keep it.”
The top-seed Owls scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to improve to 20-12 overall and 11-0 in 6-2A play.
“Our guys worked incredibly hard and stayed persistent with our process,” said Smith about the Owls approach to district play. “So when it came time to play in those games that really mattered I felt they were prepared and confident in their abilities to handle any situation.”
The Owls advanced to the Region 3-2A tournament which they will host on Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9.
