REGION BUSINESS; Tigers run-rule 4-1A foes Trousdale, Jackson

By Shea Haile Courier Sports

SOUTH CARTHAGE  — It was an all District 8-1A affair as the Gordonsville High Tigers baseball team and the Trousdale County Yellow Jackets battled for the Region 4-1A title. The Tigers plated eight runs in the first two innings en route to an eventual 11-1 victory last Saturday evening at Crump Paris Park.

“I have been really impressed with their energy and how they approached both games,” said Gordonsville head baseball coach Travis Humes. “Those were really competitive teams in Jackson County and Trousdale County. We have played both of them this year.”

Humes continued, “It is a really exciting time to be a Tiger — being able to win the region and host sub-state (sectionals).

With the win, Gordonsville set the stage for a home Class 1A sectional series against Region 3-1A champion South Pittsburg. The series is slated to begin Wednesday, May 13 as the Tigers (21-6) look to return to the Class 1A state tournament for their first appearance since 2024. Wednesday’s diamond action at Crump Paris Park will be a doubleheader between the Tigers and the Pirates beginning at 4:30. Thursday’s if necessary game three would begin at 6:00.

East Tennessee University signee and 1A Mr. Baseball finalist Colton Bennett earned the win with a five inning, two hit performance on the mound. The senior posted nine strikeouts.

At the plate, Big Blue posted seven hits as senior Rook Rackley led the way with three hits. Cason Stinnett and Sam Ausderau added two hits apiece as Ausderau posted three RBIs.

The Tigers are one step closer to a return to the Class 1A State Tournament as Big Blue rides a seven game winning streak into sectional play.

“It is difficult with as well that we have played recently to single out one performance,” said Humes. “It is a collective effort and I think that should be highlighted.”

“We have had good pitching, we have played clean defense and top-to-bottom through our lineup we have been able to get timely hits. We have been able to move runners, get people over and drive them in.”
