MURFREESBORO — The Gordonsville High flag football team (20-2) got their first taste of Class 1A tournament play last week. The unit claimed three pool play victories Thursday.
Big Blue began play with a 13-7 triumph over Coalfield. In their second pool play game, the Tigers edged Pearl Cohn 14-12.
Gordonsville posted their most dominant win of the tournament with a 31-12 victory over Jackson North Side.
The Lady Tigers faced MASE in the quarterfinals after securing a No.1 seed for Friday’s bracket play.
“I am very proud of the girls,” said GHS head flag football coach Brandy Jackson. “They had a lot of adversity yesterday during pool play. They overcame the challenges and we left 3-0. We were feeling good.”
“We came in and played well during in the first game. The five game mark I believe it got to be a little too much.”
The Lady Tigers faced MASE in the quarterfinals after securing a No.1 seed for Friday’s bracket play.
Gordonsville staved off a late conversion attempt to defeat MASE 20-19 and advance to the semifinals.
“Our defense was our backbone all year and they did a great job all year,” said Coach Stephen Jackson. “To be in situations like Saturday (region championship), it was 8-2 and we had to have a late stop. Throughout the year, we have had times where we have had to get stops. The defense did a great job of finding a way. In flag football, it is all about finding a way to get the flag pulled or the ball knocked down and they did a great job of that.”
After securing their 20th win of the season in a one point showdown with MASE, Gordonsville squared off against eventual Class 1A champion Creek Wood.
Gordonsville was shutout in the 18-0 Creek Wood triumph and the unit’s impressive season came to an end.
“That is the hard thing about coming down here and playing,” said Stephen Jackson about preparing with film. “A lot pf people do not film their games. Trying to get film for teams was hard this last week. Everyone but two teams that we did not have any film on. I called multiple people to get film.”
