Food Truck – Mobile Pantry helps fill need

By Eddie West Staff Writer

With the increasing cost of groceries and more recently the surging price of gasoline, many residents are finding themselves cutting back.

Cutting back is not an option for some individuals on a limited to no income.

There are a number of resources within our community to help those who may find themselves needing assistance.

One of those resources is the Food Truck—Mobile Food Pantry which makes routine stops  at the Smith County Agriculture Center in South Carthage.

Money for the Food Truck is provided through a “Hunger Relief Fund” which is financially supported with cash donations from churches as well as monetary contributions from individual residents and at times the fund receives grants from the Second Harvest Food Bank which is based in Nashville. Second Harvest Food Bank also provides and distributes the food items for the mobile pantry to agriculture center.

Through the local food bank program, items are delivered and dispersed on designated days at the agriculture center.

When a delivery is scheduled to arrive at the center, volunteers are on hand to unload the food delivered in a Second Harvest Food Bank tractor-trailer truck.

In single file, residents lineup their vehicles up at an entrance to the agriculture center’s covered arena.
