School system cutting staff

In an effort to down-size the school system’s budget, staffing cuts have been made. 

Several paraprofessionals and full-time substitute teacher positions have been eliminated.

The cuts in staffing are part of the school system’s overall plan to meet a $35 million budget for the 2026-2027 school year. The $35 million budget goal was set by county commissioners during August county budget discussions. 

Staffing cuts affect all schools besides the alternative school.

Some employees resigned from their position before cuts were made. 

Meanwhile, during this month’s meeting, additional cuts were approved under “Superintendent Actions”. 

Four positions were eliminated at Smith County Middle School.

Three positions were eliminated at New Middleton Elementary School.

Two positions were eliminated at Smith County High School, Gordonsville High School and Gordonsville Elementary School.

One position was eliminated at Defeated Elementary School, Union Heights Elementary School and Forks River Elementary School.

Eight full-time substitute teaching positions were eliminated and 11 paraprofessional positions were cut.
