ROUND ONE ROUT; 21 point third quarter boosts Owls over Rockets

CARTHAGE — The Smith Co. High Owls football team opened the Class 2A state playoffs with a 40-14 victory over Forrest last Friday night at Owls Stadium. 

The meeting was the first-ever between the two schools on the gridiron as Smith Co. improved to 9-2 overall while the Rockets, the number four seed from Region 4-2A, ended their season at 4-7.

The Owls first team defense continued their stellar play as they gave up only 62 yards through three quarters as the Black-and-Gold built a 40-0 lead.

The Region 3-2A champions were led by Ethan Madewell who had 18 rushes for 191 yards and three touchdowns as he scored on runs covering 30, 9 and 80 yards.

Freshman quarterback Riley Martin continued his impressive campaign by going 10-of-15 in the air for 201 yards and three touchdowns in only three quarters of action.

Key Harris had three catches for 63 yards and two touchdowns while Wyatt Claywell had three grabs for 56 yards and a score.

The Owls had 443 total yards of offense in the game.
