CARTHAGE  — The Smith County High Owls basketball team was embarrassed last Monday night with a 23 point loss to Jackson County in Gainesboro. Four days later, they played the Blue Devils in Carthage on Senior Night and used a scrappy and hustling style of play to snatch a 63-58 overtime victory on Senior Night.

The Owls five seniors – Taylor Kemp, Clayton Rigsby, Peyton Hix, Trenton Solomon and Parker Babcock – got to start and set the tone for the comeback victory.

The Owls trailed 50-42 with 2:07 to play in regulation but went on a 9-1 run in the final 90 seconds to tie the game at 51-all.

Riley Martin made a trey at the 46.6 second mark and Gage Gibbs made a trey with six seconds left to tie the game at 51-all. Jackson Co. rushed up the floor after Gibbs’ left corner trey but misfired on a 40 footer to send the game into overtime.

In the extra session, the Owls made 3-of-3 field goal attempts and 6-of-7 at the foul line to secure the victory.

Smith Co. improved to 9-15 overall and 3-1 in District 5AA play while the Blue Devils dropped to 11-9 overall and 3-2 in 5AA.
