MONTEREY — Despite being only 2-7 for the season, the Smith County High Owls football team had an opportunity to grab third place honors in Region 3-2A last Friday night.

The Owls squared off with the Wildcats at Monterey as the hosts came in with a 6-3 mark.

Monterey’s run game and tough as nails defense were the big keys in the Wildcats’ 40-0 victory.

Monterey will play at Region 4-2A second seed Forrest while the Owls will travel to top-seed Marion County in the Class 2A playoffs.

“I’m proud of our team and coaches,” said Smith Co. High head coach Matt Dyer. “Our guys played hard and fought all night. Our guys have done that all season. We are low on numbers but the guys we have are fighters and I’d go to war with them any time. Football is a hard sport and physical and it’s not for everybody. If it was easy everybody would do it.”
