Stiffer penalties for juveniles
By Eddie West Staff Writer
State lawmakers have addressed issues concerning penalties for juveniles convicted of various crimes.
A new state law allows for stiffer penalties for minors who are convicted of a more serious crime.
Meanwhile, the new law also addresses penalties for convicted juvenile offenders who demonstrate progress through the rehabilitation process.
Lawmakers say the new law better addresses the serious nature of juvenile crimes.
Under the new state law, which became effective on January 1 (2025), juveniles who are convicted of a more serious crime could potentially have added penalties.
At the same time, the new state law allows convicted juveniles who have proven rehabilitation through the judicial process could be recognized with lessor penalties.
Labeled a “blended sentence”, the new law is intended to close loopholes which allow juveniles to commit serious and violent crimes with few consequences.
